This book is based on a journal I kept when I travelled with SUN BEAR, a Chippewa medicine person. His vision was to create THE BEAR TRIBE, a tribe of Native and non-Native people to teach survival skills. He correctly foresaw the many natural catastrophes that have taken place, and called for people to grow their own food, re-learn hunting in a sacred manner, and place their dependencies on the Earth Mother and each other.
During my time with him my son died from an accidental poisoning. Sun Bear offered his energetic shelter while I began the painful journey of recovering from a trauma I never dreamed could happen (no parent does).
Our cross country road trip took us to communes, alternative newspapers, back-to-the-land folks, to The Farm, from the Pacific to the Atlantic. We never stayed in a motel; we were in the homes of the people, or in our sleeping bags on the land.
